Is public liability required by law?
Public liability is not a legal requirement in the same way as employers’ liability. For pubs, bars, nightclubs and other licensed premises it is still central to trading safely — slips, spills, glass-related injuries and property damage can produce substantial compensation claims.
Pub Insurance 4u offers limits of indemnity from £1 million to £5 million to help with legal costs and settlements where covered. Your schedule sets out the exact limit and basis of cover.
What public liability covers at a venue
Our standard public and product liability policies are designed for hospitality risk — customers on your premises, deliveries, and day-to-day trading. Cover typically responds when a third party is injured or their property is damaged and your business is legally responsible.
- Customer injury in the bar, function room or beer garden
- Damage to a guest’s property on your premises
- Product-related injury from food or drink you supply, where covered
- Legal defence costs alongside compensation, subject to policy terms
Product liability is often included alongside public liability on hospitality packages — check your wording for how products cover applies to your menu and service style.
What it does not replace
Public liability does not cover your own buildings, stock or business interruption — those are separate sections you can add on our additional cover page. If you employ staff, you will also need employers’ liability by law.
How to arrange cover
Complete our online quote form with your premises type, turnover and the limit you need. There is no instant checkout — an advisor reviews your details and returns terms. When you accept and pay, we place you on cover and email your documents.
